A growing wave of youth activism is now challenging long standing leadership within Kenya’s labour movement, with calls for accountability and generational change taking centre stage.

Speaking during a session of Bunge la Mwananchi at , activist and former bunge la mwananchi president francis Awino  criticised the leadership of  cotu, accusing him of overstaying in office and failing to account for resources at the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU).

Owino linked the concerns to the broader economic challenges facing Kenyans, noting that many citizens are currently grappling with financial instability and a rising cost of living.

"Next week on Wednesday, we will be coming to your offices to see the audited books of COTU,” Awino said, as he addressed a charged crowd of wananchi.

According to Awino, the demand for audited financial records is part of a wider push for transparency within institutions that represent workers’ interests. He argued that organisations such as COTU must remain accountable to the public, especially at a time when economic pressures continue to mount.

The discussion at the forum also highlighted concerns over prolonged stays in leadership positions, with activists warning that extended tenures limit opportunities for younger generations and weaken accountability structures.

Planned demonstrations are expected to take place on Wednesday, with activists indicating their intention to march to COTU offices to demand access to financial records and answers from union leadership.

While has previously defended the operations of COTU, the latest developments signal increasing pressure from grassroots movements seeking greater openness and leadership renewal.

The unfolding events underscore the continued relevance of Bunge la Mwananchi as a platform for public debate, where citizens voice concerns and challenge authority on national issues.

As the planned protest approaches, attention now turns to whether the calls for accountability will trigger meaningful reforms within Kenya’s labour movement—or deepen the standoff between youth activists and established leadership.
