Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has raised concern over Kenya’s preparedness to handle a looming fuel crisis, warning that the country risks falling behind as other countries move swiftly to secure supply and stabilize prices.
In a press statement released on Saturday, Nyoro criticized the government’s response, saying the country is not adequately prepared to deal with fuel shocks. He noted that while other nations are implementing firm measures, Kenya appears to be relying on hope rather than strategy.
The legislator also accused some leaders of taking advantage of the situation for personal gain, particularly in the handling of the government to government fuel import arrangement. According to him, interference in the deal has disrupted its original intent and opened room for exploitation.
Nyoro further alleged that individuals linked to fuel deals and Turkana oil operations are using the crisis to push for preferential treatment, including tax exemptions under special economic arrangements. He warned that such moves undermine fair competition and deny the country much needed revenue.
To cushion Kenyans from rising fuel costs, Nyoro proposed immediate interventions, including increasing fuel subsidies, reducing or removing VAT on fuel, and reviewing fuel levies introduced in recent years. He emphasized that these measures are necessary to ease the burden on citizens already struggling with the high cost of living.
He also called for urgent action, noting that taxes and levies account for a significant portion of pump prices. According to him, delays in implementing reforms could worsen inflation and deepen economic strain across all sectors.
Nyoro dismissed attempts to shift blame to external factors, insisting that Kenyan leaders must take responsibility and act decisively. He urged the government to prioritize practical solutions and suspend political distractions, warning that time is running out.
As fuel remains a critical driver of the economy, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the proposed measures will be implemented. For now, Kenyans continue to watch closely as pressure mounts for swift and effective action.
