NAIROBI, Kenya — Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has quit the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the opposition under the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), in a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro announced the move on Monday, August 17, 2026, saying he and his supporters had decided to join the party after extensive consultations on the country’s political direction.

“Mimi kama Ndindi Nyoro na wafuasi wangu, kutoka leo, nimeingia chama inaitwa People’s Party of Kenya. As all members of the People’s Party of Kenya, we have today joined the opposition,” Nyoro said.

The legislator said his decision followed months of consultations with several opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Cabinet Secretary Martha Karua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Nyoro said the consultations were aimed at identifying a political path that would place the interests of Kenyans at the centre of the country’s leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I have been carrying a heavy burden. I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have,” he said.

His decision marks a significant shift for a politician who has previously been closely associated with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Nyoro has now pledged to work with other opposition leaders as they seek to mount a challenge to the government in the 2027 polls. He urged Kenyans to consider the People’s Party of Kenya as part of the emerging political alternatives.

“Mkiangalia viongozi wale watapeleka Kenya mbele from next year, I also ask humbly the people of Kenya, muangalie pia People’s Party,” he said.

The move comes as political realignments intensify across the country, with various leaders positioning themselves and building alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro is expected to take his new political vehicle to different parts of the country as he seeks to explain his decision to leave UDA and build support for the People’s Party of Kenya.

His departure is likely to reshape political calculations within the ruling coalition, particularly in the Mount Kenya region, where Nyoro has maintained a strong political base.

The development also adds momentum to the formation of a broader opposition front, with Nyoro indicating that the People’s Party of Kenya is ready to work with other leaders who share a common vision for the country.

The Kiharu MP’s move comes less than a year to the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for further political negotiations, alliances and defections as parties prepare for the contest.

The political landscape is therefore expected to remain fluid as leaders weigh their options and seek alliances capable of securing support across different regions and voter groups.
