Machakos Governor says lost learning time 'cannot be recovered'
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on the National Government to urgently resolve the university lecturers' strike, which began on September 2, 2026, so that students can return to class.
Speaking during a development tour of Mbiuni Ward in Mwala Sub-County, the governor said the strike was a major loss to students and to the country. She said it had left thousands of university students idle.
"Wasted time cannot be recovered. Let us bring this to an end. Let us please negotiate with the lecturers and give them what they want so that they can go back to the universities and teach," said Wavinya.
She warned that having thousands of students out of lecture halls could have serious consequences. She urged the National Government and the lecturers to return to the negotiating table and find a lasting solution.
Her remarks add to calls from various stakeholders for an amicable resolution of the standoff, which has disrupted learning in universities across the country.
During the same tour, the governor commissioned the newly built Masii Level 4 Hospital in Mwala, a facility the county government says will improve access to specialised care for residents.
Wavinya said the hospital compares favourably with many of those in Nairobi.
"You have seen the Level 4 hospital in Masii and this hospital is even better than most of the hospitals that you find in Nairobi," wavinya said.
She said the facility has a private wing for patients who prefer to be treated privately, alongside general wards.
The hospital also has a fully equipped maternity wing. She said it supports expectant mothers throughout their care, from antenatal visits to delivery, whether the birth is normal or complicated.
"We have two fully operational theatres that will cover the region and we offer world-class services," wavinya said.
She added that the hospital currently runs specialised outpatient clinics, including orthopaedic, diabetic and hypertension clinics.
