Salim Mvurya, has assured Kenyans and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are progressing as planned, with major infrastructure projects recording significant milestones.
Speaking during a press briefing after inspecting the Talanta Sports City and the Raila Odinga International Stadium project in Kisumu, Mvurya said the visit was a follow-up on commitments made earlier this year to ensure Kenya meets CAF requirements ahead of the continental tournament.
The CS revealed that the government has already handed over two training grounds for construction, while a third facility is also under development. The training grounds are expected to be completed within two months and will serve teams participating in AFCON 2027. He added that athletics facilities, including tartan tracks, will also form part of the infrastructure.
Mvurya noted that construction at the main stadium is progressing well, with most of the remaining work focusing on mechanical and electrical installations. He said the playing surface has developed well and currently meets the required standards, although additional improvements will be carried out at Kasarani Stadium.
Beyond the stadium itself, the CS said the government has addressed key supporting infrastructure, including the installation of a one-million-litre water tank. Road works, perimeter wall construction and landscaping are also underway to ensure the venue is fully compliant with CAF standards.
According to Mvurya, the government has deployed technical teams to monitor the projects on a daily basis and provide regular progress reports to enable timely decision-making.
He also confirmed that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for AFCON 2027 is already in place under the leadership of Nicholas Musonye, with several subcommittees, including the media committee, expected to oversee different aspects of tournament preparations.
Mvurya expressed confidence that the country remains on schedule and called on Kenyans to support the preparations as the government works towards successfully hosting the continental football showpiece.
"I am very happy with the progress that has happened at Raila Odinga International Stadium. As we gear up for the preparations, I want to confirm to CAF that we are in good progress in preparation for AFCON 2027," said CS Salim Mvurya.
He added:
"We are monitoring progress so that by the end of July the main works inside the stadium and part of the auxiliary works should have been completed. We are on schedule for preparations for AFCON."
