Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has unveiled its inaugural Sustainability Report while announcing a major expansion of its renewable energy development pipeline from 1,500MW to 5,500MW, signalling a bold shift in its long-term growth strategy.

The new target, announced during the launch of the Sustainability Report at Karura Forest in Nairobi, is part of KenGen's recalibrated G2G 2034 Corporate Strategy. The expanded pipeline will be driven by investments in nuclear energy, hydropower and geothermal development as the company positions itself to meet rising regional demand for clean energy and attract new investments.

Speaking during the launch, KenGen Managing Director and CEO Eng. Peter Njenga said the report marks a defining moment in the company's journey towards responsible and sustainable growth.

"Our inaugural Sustainability Report is more than a record of our ESG performance; it reflects a company that is responding decisively to a changing energy landscape. As opportunities have expanded, so too has our ambition. We have strategically recalibrated our long-term growth trajectory from 1,500MW to a 5,500MW renewable energy development pipeline, reaffirming our commitment to powering Kenya's sustainable economic transformation," said Njenga.

Njenga noted that sustainability is embedded in every aspect of KenGen's operations, from investment decisions and risk management to stakeholder engagement and environmental stewardship.

He added that the report institutionalises KenGen's long standing commitment to sustainability by providing government, investors, development partners and communities with a transparent framework for measuring environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.

The report shows that renewable energy accounted for 94.4 per cent of KenGen's electricity dispatch during the 2024/25 financial year, while the company generated 6.9 million carbon credits. It also highlights the planting of 887,220 tree seedlings, restoration of 850 hectares of degraded land, scholarships for 237 students, and clean water access for more than 42,300 households.

According to Njenga, the company remains committed to supporting Kenya's industrialisation agenda through reliable, affordable and clean energy while strengthening its position as East Africa's leading renewable energy producer.

"Our Sustainability Report is not just a corporate publication. It is a public commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible business. It demonstrates how we create value for our shareholders, protect the environment, support communities and contribute to Kenya's sustainable economic transformation," Njenga said.
