The government’s NYOTA programme continues to scale up youth empowerment efforts, with thousands of trainers and mentors now actively supporting young entrepreneurs across the country.

The initiative, which focuses on business skills development and startup capital support, has already recorded significant participation, with beneficiaries undergoing mentorship and training aimed at strengthening their entry into the MSME ecosystem.

The disbursement of the second tranche of business startup capital is expected before the end of April 2026. This will pave the way for the second phase of mentorship, scheduled to begin in April and May across all constituencies.

The programme also integrates inclusivity by extending opportunities to youth in refugee camps, particularly in Dadaab and Kakuma, who will participate alongside host communities. An additional 10,000 opportunities have been created, with 5,000 allocated to refugee camps and another 5,000 to host communities.

According to officials, this expansion is expected to boost economic engagement among young people while strengthening local economies.

“Over 3,600 trainers and 5,500 mentors have been engaged to support the NYOTA entrepreneurs, and these are diploma and graduate-level young people,” said Susan Mang'eni.

Beneficiaries of the programme receive startup capital as a grant rather than a loan, meaning they are not required to repay the funds. Instead, the expectation is that they will invest in sustainable businesses that generate income and create employment opportunities.

The programme is part of a broader government strategy to empower youth economically while increasing participation in business and expanding the country’s tax base.

Officials note that as more young people engage in entrepreneurship, the resulting economic activity will contribute to national revenue generation, ultimately supporting development initiatives and debt obligations.

So far, over 121,800 beneficiaries have received funding, marking a significant milestone in the programme’s rollout.
